About the workshop
Stop looking for the perfect baking dish. Make it!
We invite you to an intensive 5-day course where you will design and handcraft a complete set of ceramics for baking and dining.
Discover the secrets of ceramics made for a hot oven! Together with ceramic artist and designer Katarína Tesař, you will go through the whole process:
● Designing your own set: Whether you dream of sets of baking dishes, a pie dish, or a sturdy roasting pan.
● Slab building: You will master techniques for shaping sturdy vessels.
● Functional details: You will learn how to correctly create and attach handles, ears, and different types of grips, shape rims for a lid, or ensure stability.
Exclusive bonus: An extra day will be available to finalize your set approximately 4 weeks after the workshop. After firing and glazing, you will have space to decorate your pieces with patina or special overglaze colors. Give your ceramics one last personal touch!

Program
Day 1: Key principles of functional design – ergonomics (how to design tableware that holds well even with oven mitts) and technology (how to choose clay that withstands thermal shock and what to pay attention to when building and later using ceramics for baking). Designs, sketches, and planning the collection.
Day 2: Creation and Form – slab building shapes, construction of the set. Phasing the preparation of the most complex pieces.
Day 3: Harmony and Consistency – how to ensure individual pieces share the same design language and form a coherent, coordinated whole.
Day 4: Ergonomics in practice – demonstration of different types of grips and varied techniques for making them. Explanation and demonstration of principles for attaching them so they don’t break and are ergonomic. Shaping accessories, refining rims and details.
Day 5: Color and Surface – color psychology, working with engobes (colored clays) and creative techniques for their use. Final surface finishing. Presentation of works, group photo with participants.

The participation fee includes:

● 15 kg of clay (stoneware suitable for temperature changes when baking)
● Engobes, glazes, and natural patinas for surface decoration
● 2 x firing (bisque + glaze)

About the instructor
Katarína Tesař is a Slovak artist and designer who has long collaborated with Slovak Folk Majolica. In her work, she combines traditional craft techniques with a modern perspective on the design and functionality of ceramic objects. She focuses on authorial collections of tableware and objects for dining that carry the signature of the hand and the material.
