Internationally recognised as a centre for ceramics, glass and artistic craftsmanship, Höhr-Grenzhausen is home to a vibrant and innovative creative scene. In 2025, the town became the first small town in Germany to be designated a UNESCO Creative City, recognising its distinctive combination of traditional craftsmanship, artistic innovation, research and contemporary creative practices.
Located in the Westerwald region, Höhr-Grenzhausen offers an inspiring environment for artists, bringing together traditional ceramic and glass techniques, specialised facilities, research and contemporary artistic experimentation. The town provides an ideal setting for creative exchange and collaboration with artists and professionals working across Europe.
The Artist-in-Residence Programme in Höhr-Grenzhausen offers emerging European artists the opportunity to develop their artistic practice within an internationally recognised centre for ceramics and glass.
The six-week residency provides access to professional studios, specialised equipment, materials and technical expertise. Artists can work in an environment where traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary and technically advanced approaches to glass and ceramics.
In 2027, the residency programme will focus on glass as its main artistic medium.
The open call is aimed at professional European artists who graduated no more than five years ago.
Students are not eligible to apply.
Applications from artists based in Thuringia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg are particularly encouraged, although artists from these regions are not required to apply.
The Artist-in-Residence Programme will take place from 1 February to 12 March 2027.
The six-week residency includes:
Residents are required to be present in Höhr-Grenzhausen for the entire six-week residency period. No full or partial exemptions from the residency period are possible.
Residents will have access to the K2 workshops and to the fully equipped workshops of the Institute for Artistic Ceramics and Glass at Koblenz University of Applied Sciences.
The residency also provides access to the collections and archives of the Westerwald Ceramics Museum, offering additional opportunities for research and artistic development.
Artists will receive professional support and mentoring from an experienced on-site assistant throughout the residency.
The programme provides access to specialised kilns, technical facilities and materials, allowing residents to experiment with glass and develop new artistic approaches in a professional production environment.
The residency will conclude with a final exhibition at the Westerwald Ceramics Museum on 12 March 2027.
The programme also includes support for transporting additional works selected for the exhibition.
Accommodation will be provided in Höhr-Grenzhausen, allowing the selected artist to live and work within the town throughout the residency.
